Outlive

The Science and Art of Longevity

by Peter Attia, Bill Gifford

notes

i picked this book up assuming i was going to get a run-of-the-mill up-to-date take on the latest research in science's quest to live forever.

and it is true that many chapters were filled with summaries of general anti-aging reserach. the entire chapter on cancer was well put together and filled in many gaps for me. i also enjoyed his scathing reviews of health research in the modern age, particularly around nutrition and exercise.

however, the main purpose of this book was about the overall story and advice to focus on healthspan, as opposed to just lifespan.

perhaps, in the end, it's a simple concept. maybe obvious to many. and you wouldn't be too far off if you claimed the advice amounts to a suggestion to stop being reactive and start being proactive in your health lifestyle.

yet, the concept delivers nuances, challenges and new ways of thinking if you dig into the details. i got a lot out of this book by reflecting on my own journey outside of the book.

while i don't find myself fully bought into all of the author's recommendations , i do appreciate in the end they advocated for a personalized approach to health. their chapters on nutrition and exercise were well thought out in arming the reader with tools, rather than simple prescriptions that will ultimately fail for most.

in the end, i did walk away with a few tangible action items. first, to invest in a number of heart health related tests more proactively. second, to discuss the topic of longevity differently with those i care about. while the science of longevity is fascinating and appealing to my inner-sci-fi-geek, the lens of a longer healthspan is not only more meaningful, but also a requirement no matter how much longer any of us want to live.
