summary

In a post-apocalyptic future, the North American continent has been carved up into Capitol and 12 surrounding districts, controlled and suppressed through the annual Hunger Games. As punishment for the defeated rebellion, one boy and one girl aged between twelve and eighteen are chosen by lottery from each district to participate in the televised gladiatorial fight-to-the-death. When Katniss' younger sister Prim is selected as a tribute for the games, Katniss volunteers in her place, knowing that it is a death sentence. Katniss, who is skilled at hunting and survival, is pitted against the most violent and experienced tributes, some of whom have been trained for this their whole lives. With her district’s boy tribute, an amiable baker’s son named Peeta, by her side, Katniss will have to navigate the gamesmanship, alliances and deception of the Hunger Games to be the last one standing and bring hope to her oppressed district.
