In a realm threatened by the malevolent fury of ancient demons, an elfin princess named Amberle sets out on a perilous quest to gather the magic that will enable her to create a legendary tree, capable of giving its protection to all the peoples of the land. Meanwhile, Wil Ohmsford, the last of the Shannara family bloodline, and a small band of brave companions embark on a perilous journey to find Amberle and convince her to undertake the quest. But the road they travel is fraught with danger--from the air, from the ground and from those who would stop them before they reach their destination. Their travels bring them to the dark and mysterious passages of the underground city of Safehold and into the caves beneath the Krimpen Mountains, and eventually beyond the edge of their known world. As they journey deeper into the unknown, every step is a challenge to their resolve and courage, only the enduring hope of Amberle lighting the way home.
