Splatoon 2 is a third-person shooter video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. It is the sequel to Splatoon (2015) and was released in July 2017. Players control Inklings, humanoid cephalopods who can transform into squid form to swim through ink and cover the playing field. The game's central gameplay involves splatting other players with ink in order to control the most territory. It features a variety of single-player and multiplayer modes, including the traditional Turf War, which involves battling for turf control, and Ranked Battles, which feature a variety of game modes that require players to work together to achieve victory. Splatoon 2 also features an expansive single-player campaign, known as the Octo Expansion, in which players take on the role of Agent 8, an Octoling who must complete a series of challenges in order to escape from a mysterious facility.
